Today we celebrat a huge milestone.  Nicolas has officially completed his 33 Radiation treatments at Princess Margaret Hospital. In his short 21 months on this earth, Nicolas has taught me so much about life, love and faith. Nicolas, you continue to inspire us all with your courage and bravery and we all will be celebrating in your honour this long holiday weekend!

Andrea told me that there was a nice party for Nicolas today, once he awoke from his last treatment, with toys and hugs from all his treating nurses and doctors. I have attached a picture of Nicolas and his brave MOM below, showing all his presents 🙂

The celebrating will be short lived as Nicolas begins an intensive rehab program at Bloorview Children’s Hospital on Tuesday May 22. He will continue with this program until Monday June 18th when he will be admitted back into Sick Kids Hospital to begin his Chemotherapy treatments. So, the journey is not complete as yet, however we are finally one step closer….and for that, we are all very greatful.

The Final Countdown!

It is hard to believe that Nicolas’ radiation treatment is almost finished.  Only 5 more treatments, with his final one being on Thursday May 17th! Nicolas is doing well and taking it all like a champ.  We will certainly be celebrating on Friday, and thankfully we have a long holiday weekend 🙂

The celebrating will be kept to the weekend, as Nicolas will begin his outpatient treatment at Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital on Tuesday May 22nd. This will include speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy to name a few.  We don’t have a start date as of yet for Chemotherapy, but it is supposed to start 3 – 4 weeks after radiation.

A tribute to all…

Tomorrow – May 10th, marks the 4 month mark since Nicolas was diagnosed with Ependymoma. I had never heard if this type of Cancer and was pretty content to believe that Cancer happens to “other” people…not us. How life has changed in such a short period of time.  Of course it has been very difficult, to say the least, but I have to also say that I have met some amazingly, wonderful people on this journey.  Not only the ones I have met in person, but the network of familes I have met on-line who give advise, support and just encouragement during this difficult time.

There is one lady in particular who has truly endeavoured to bring awareness to this disease and has been such a pillar of support and encouragement.  Angela – your work and dedication is truly an inspiration.  Angela’s son also a Nicholas, is undergoing treatment at St. Jude and she has prepared this beautiful clip to showcase children who have touched her life.  I thought it was a beautiful tribute to the brave children who are fighting this disease and worth sharing with you all.
